Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The FAA Civil Aerospace Medical Institute(CAMI) Medical Research Team conducts medical reviews and hazard analyses of FAA medical certification records, toxicology and autopsy results for all fatal and high profile U. S. aircraft accidents. The medical case review evaluates whether a pilot's medical conditions pose a hazard to flight safety. The purpose of this study is to compare identified hazards to aviation safety for first, second and third class pilots involved in fatal U. S. aircraft accidents during CY 2010 from an analysis of medical case review and autopsy files METHODS: Hazard data on fatally injured first, second and third class pilots, based on a review of FAA medical certification records and autopsy reports, were obtained from the Medical ANalysis and TRAcking(MANTRA) database for CY 2010.
