Particularidades geológicas y petrológicas de los cerros Zaruma Urcu y Santa Bárbara; Distrito Minero Zaruma-Portovelo, Provincia de El Oro

Abstract:

The thesis that is presented under the title Geological and petrological peculiarities of Zaruma Urcu and Santa Bárbara hills; Zaruma-Portovelo mining district, El Oro province has been developed with the aim of accessing the title of Geological Engineer at the University of Guayaquil. Its realization was made possible by the unconditional support of Dr. Richard Banda Gavilaes to carry out the research of the mentioned areas. the main objective of the titling work was to analyze the mineralogical peculiarities of Zaruma Urcu and Santa Bárbara hills and the rocks of the Portovelo Unit, in the Zaruma-Portovelo mining district. The methodology used was divided into two stages, the first one included detailed documentation and the collection of samples from specific points for subsequent macroscopic description, and ArcGis software was used to prepare the maps. the second stage consisted in making thin sheets to detail the mineralogical composition and make the respective interpretation between both hills and the type of rock present in areas surrounding the suty area such as the Portovelo Unit. It was determined that the predominant rock in the Zaruma Urcu and Santa Bárbara hills is of a rhyolitic composition? (Acidic) completely altered, there being two halos of alteration near the study areas: the first halo by silicification dominating the upper part of the cerro Zaruma Urcu and the second a type of argillic alteration; taking into account that the propylitic alteration (chlorite, epidote and calcite in small amount) is dominating the Portovelo Unit. The three series go from East to Wesr the Muluncay series presents low propylitic alteration with a large concentration of sulfide minerals (pyrite) grouped in one direction, the Portovelo series presents a dominant propylitic alteration, observing epidote lenses in hand samples, also It presents a slight phyllic alteration in depth with traces of sericite and quartz (porous), in addition, it contains small pyrite minerals disseminated throughout the sample. Finally, the Faique series presents a propylitic alteration with magnetic oxidation minerals embedded in the openings of the embedding rock
