Patriarchal negotiation? The impasse over the decriminalization of abortion in cases of rape in Ecuador

Abstract:

This article seeks to clarify the meanings of the actions carried out by female national assembly members belonging to the Alianza País political movement, which is currently in power in Ecuador. To this end, I will examine an event that resulted in extreme tension between feminist and conservative positions within the political movement. This was the parliamentary debate on the decriminalization of abortion in cases of rape, within the context of the enactment of the country's new penal code. It is not clear whether the feminist assembly members belonging to the movement engaged in a patriarchal negotiation or simply submitted to the orders of President Rafael Correa. I attempt to demonstrate the existence of a paradox: women have gained access to political representation but have not managed to make their arguments heard within this legislative sphere.
