Abstract:

Poor oral hygiene is one of the factors that contribute to the formation of dental plaque that can trigger more than one periodontal disease as it is considered the second cause of dental loss in the world after tooth decay. The main objective of this study is to determine the patterns of oral hygiene associated with periodontal health in patients who attend the comprehensive adult clinic of the Pilot School of Dentistry in 2019. The methodological design corresponds a qualitative-quantitative study of a descriptive, documentary and cross-sectional type; 115 patients with a greater presence in the female gender were studied with 52%, regarding the frequency of ages that came most was between 20 to 25 years that is equivalent to 40%. In addition, it was determined that the patients brushed their teeth twice a day in 73% using only toothpaste and toothbrush, as for the simplified oral hygiene index they presented 51% poor hygiene and in the PSR 44% presented code 3. It is concluded that oral hygiene measures contribute optimally to periodontal health and that brushing twice a day with the use of toothbrush and toothpaste is not considered sufficient to have an excellent index of oral hygiene. Furthermore, oral hygiene involvement is more prevalent in the male gender than in the female one.
