Abstract:
Investigated the perceptions of Venezuelan adults concerning social class (SOC) distinctions, social mobility, and factors influencing social mobility. All Ss were interviewed at their workplaces concerning their perceptions of class divisions, the possibilities for SOC advancement, the factors influencing SOC advancement, and Ss' own SOC. SOC perceptions were assessed using a technique that required Ss to assign various occupational groups to different levels of an SOC pyramid. The realistic quality of Ss' SOC perceptions was estimated by comparing Ss' responses to the criterion SOC pyramid constructed by the authors. Realistic quality of Ss' perceptions of their own SOC was assessed by comparison of Ss' self-perceptions with SOC determinations based on occupational and lifestyle criteria.
