Performance Enhancement of VLC-Based Systems Using Diversity Combining Schemes in the Receiver

Abstract:

In this paper, the application and benefits of several combining schemes to create diversity at the optical receiver are analyzed and compared in a multi-cell indoor Visible Light Communication (VLC) system. The implementation of a pyramidal Angle Diversity Receiver (ADR) to mitigate the Intercell Interference (ICI) of the system is also analyzed. Thus, three combining schemes in the receiver side are investigated: Select Best Combining (SBC), Equal Gain Combining (EGC), and Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC), which in conjunction with the presented ADR, configure an optical receiver that optimizes the system performance by combining the received signals. The results indicate that the ADR implemented with the MRC scheme outperform the SBC and EGC schemes in terms of signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and User Data Rate.
