Performance analysis of ITU G 992.5 standard in a real environment

Abstract:

Access technologies have evolved in different environments with a wide dissemination and use to bring internet services to businesses and home users. Connection via telephone line has been one of the major media of access to network services. However, real networks have limitations due to a distant link. In this paper, we review and analyse the real performance reached by an operator offering access to the network through the standard ADSL2 + ITU G992.5. We performed various tests on different points of the physical network in order to validate CIR and EIR rates offered by the operator. We measured network metrics through the D-ITG traffic injector and selected Bitrate, Latency, Jitter and Packet loss for performance evaluation purposes. Our results show a significant decrease of the real performance versus theorethical definition, at least 61% for the shortest distance up to 97% for the major distance.
