Peripheral Neuropathy and foot ulceration risk according International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot criteria


Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the presence of diabetic neuro-pathy and foot ulcer risk according IWGDF criteria. Materials and Methods: A multicenter in a sample of 100 diabetic patients in three health centers located in Puerto Ordáz, Bolívar State, Venezuela, selected transverse descriptive study using non-probabilistic intentional sampling data obtained were classified using the scale IWGDF. The data obtained were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v.19 (IBM SPSS Chicago, IL). Results: Female sex was more affected 64%. 54% of the population is covered ages of 61-75 years. Only 31% were smokers and 26% consumed alcohol. Duration of diabetes 13.6 years on average, p <0.001. The average BMI 29.15 p0,036. Regarding the risk of ulceration according to IWGDF, 74% are at high risk and 16% maximum risk; combined reach 90% of the population at high risk for foot ulcer. Intermittent claudication and its relationship with risk of ulceration 68.8% maximum risk. P 0.024. Surface sensitivity abolished in high-risk 51.4% and 93.8% ± 0,001 at maximum risk. Venous vascular disease and 68.9% high blood risk by 50% in maximum risk p0,024. Deep sensitivity (vibratory) absent in 85.1% of patients with high risk and 81.3% in patients at highest risk. p0,001 Conclusion: our diabetic patients are at high risk to suffer from foot ulcers.
