Peter Thomson
Abstract:
I first met Peter Thomson in 1971. I had written to several Drama departments in my last year as an undergraduate enquiring about the possibility of doing research on nineteenth-century British theatre. From Peter, I received an extremely enthusiastic response, expressing delight that someone wanted to do research in that area and full of helpful suggestions as to possible research topics. I had written to Peter at Manchester, but in the meantime he had moved to Swansea, which is where I initially enrolled. Unlike some academics of that time, Peter was totally free of pomposity, direct, down to earth and very supportive. For various reasons, I only managed one part-time year at Swansea but when Peter moved to Exeter I resumed and completed my PhD there.
