Pharmacovigilance system for patients in the hospitalization area of a hospital in ecuador
Abstract:
Introduction: Medications have changed the way diseases are treated. However, there is evidence that adverse reactions are a frequent cause of morbidity-mortality. The incidents that lead to hospitalization due to medications has been assessed since they are an indicator of the most severe adverse effects resulting from the use of drugs in the communities. Ecuador is taking the first steps towards becoming part of a select group of nations that have implemented Pharmacovigilance, receiving support from government authorities for it. Objective: To implement a pharmacovigilance system for detecting and reporting adverse drug reactions, thus increasing patient and population safety at "Jaime Roldós Aguilera" Hospital. Methods: A prospective and descriptive study was conducted from April to September, 2016. The studied sample group consisted of all patients in the hospitalization area of "Jaime Roldós Aguilera" Hospital in Los Ríos province. The sample consisted of 102 patients who presented adverse drug reactions during this time. Results: Adverse drug reactions were detected in 102 cases: 66.3% of the patients were female; 26.5% of the patients presented adverse reactions to antibacterial medications with predominance of skin manifestations (51.96 %). Of the adverse reactions, 76.47% were mild, however, in 51.96% of the cases it was necessary to interrupt the treatment. Recoveries without sequelae were found in 74.51% of the patients. Conclusions: The proposal to detect and report adverse drug reactions and to ensure safety of the patients and the population was designed and validated.
