Photobioreactors within the framework of circular economy and poverty eradication: Bioenergy production in the ecuador-peru border integration zone

Abstract:

The principle of circular economy is reviewed and applied to recent advances in the development of photobioreactors for bioenergy application. The border between Ecuador and Peru is considered as a case study. A set of technologies for biogas and biodiesel production that can generate productive synergies involving sustainable processes and reuse of products has been identified. Net present value, estimation of CO2equivalent emissions, multicriteria analysis and logistic models are applied in this study. This chapter mainly highlights the potential of laminar photobioreactor as a technological breakthrough in systemic bioenergy production. Challenges and opportunities of this promising technology in Latin America are also discussed. An example of the bioenergy production at the border between Ecuador and Peru illustrates how food production, waste management and bioenergy generation can interact and produce environmental, social and economic benefits that can contribute to poverty eradication.
