Photogrametric assessment of changes of coastal line position in the Unare Lagoon Barrier, Anzoategui State, Venezuela
Abstract:
The temporal-space quantification of changes in the coast line position of the Unare Lagoon was undertaken, using photogrametric measurements. Aerial photographs of different years from the Geographical Institute of Venezuela "Simón Bolívar" were used, corresponding to the 2293A mission (January 1961), scale 1:50,000 and pictures 037, 111, 040 and 042 from mission 0401161, scale 1:10.000, in 1980. In view of the difficulty to accurately locate the same points from different mission data, in the area under study (coastal barrier of the Unare Lagoon), a geometric method was used. A 150 m setback of the coastline was shown for the 1961 to 1980 period, which can be considered as a combined effect of factors and natural elements and antropics of regional and/or local character, introducing serious modifications in the sedimentary balance. This changes resulted in erosion of the beaches with evident setback of the coastal lines and alteration of existent infrastructure through base deterioration, causing their collapse and consequent economic losses in the area. It is recommended to promote further investigation of this problem, in order to gain knowledge on how to establish norms and occupation rules, and better management of the space. This should help to mitigate and prevent the impact of the coastal erosion on the region, leading to its controlled and sustainable development.
