Pierre robin sequency: importance of the palatal cleft for mandibular distraction
Abstract:
Background: The Pierre Robin sequency is characterized by the triad of micrognathia, upper airway obstruction, glossoptosis and possible palatal cleft. Objectives: To evaluate if the presence of a palatal cleft in patients submitted to mandibular distraction impacts the results of final opening of the airway. Evaluate the relation between mandibular discrepancy and palatal cleft. Methods: In the period from 2013 to 2017, 31 patients with Pierre-Robin sequence submitted to mandibular distraction were evaluated. Age range was 3 to 90 days, 51.6% were females and 48.4% were males. 80.6% presented associated palatal cleft Findings: Comparative analysis showed that, disregarding maxilomandibular discrepancy, there was no significant difference between groups. When that discrepancy was greater than 7 mm, the cleft patients presented a better result concerning opening of the airway. Conclusion: When …
