Planning and optimization in the drilling of directional oil wells

Abstract:

This work presents a mathematical method for the design of a three dimensional (3D) well trajectory using cubic functions and genetic algorithms to find the optimum drilling depth. The trajectories are obtained for various conditions at the end of the trajectory, minimizing the true measured depth (TMD). The use of cubic functions and genetic algorithms provides a continuous and smooth trajectory, connecting the current position of the hole (possibly at the surface) to a target on the locus of the trajectory.
