Plastic surgery in cranial base surgery: Incisions, calvarial grafts, and soft tissue flaps

Abstract:

The availability of multiple reconstructive options is often a factor in the decision to undertake complex cranial base resections. Flaps provide an adequate seal between the dura and the paranasal sinuses and may also greatly enhance the postoperative appearance of the patient. This article reviews the wide array of alternatives for cranial base reconstruction, from local pericranial and galeal flaps through regional musculocutaneous flaps to microvascular flap reconstructions. The use of cranial bone grafts and the planning of incisions to allow for appropriate reconstruction is discussed. Copyright © 2000 by W.B. Saunders Company.
