Plastics recycling opportunities in Mexico

Abstract:

A survey of waste generation patterns in the metropolitan zone of Guadalajara, Mexico was done to find out the availability of postconsumer plastic and their distribution per plastic type. The population was classified in four categories and each category in two subcategories. The average amount of waste for subcategory was calculated upon classifying and weighing the garbage per each sampled home. A survey of the regional plastic recycling companies was done to find out how they procure their plastic, and the treatment done to the plastics prior to processing. An evaluation of the opportunities for recycling the different types of plastics was done.
