Plastrón apendicular en niños de 5 a 15 años, un enfoque epidemiológico

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is an inflammation of the cecal appendix, this disease consists of 4 clinical stages; within these there are complications ranging from abdominal and residual abscesses, localized peritonitis, generalized peritonitis and sepsis, among others. As well as the appendicular plastron, a disease defined as an inflammatory mass containing adjacent viscera, greater omentum, as well as the presence of abscesses and phlegmons. OBJECTIVE: To determine complications associated with appendicular plastron in children aged 5 to 15 years, an epidemiologic focus at Hospital Francisco Icaza in the period from January 2019 to December 202. METHODOLOGY: 745 pediatric patients were determined as population with a sample of 100 for the analysis of clinical-epidemiological variables, who were attended in the period; January 2019 to December 2021 at Hospital Franciso Icaza Bustamante (Guayaquil, Ecuador) with the diagnosis of acute appendicitis with localized and generalized peritonitis. RESULTS: The analysis performed revealed that the female gender was more incident than males (approximate ratio of 3.5:1), as for pediatric age the majority of patients were 6 (15%) and 8 years old (12%). The study revealed that among the most common post-surgical complications, surgical wound infection (29.9%) had the highest incidence, followed by residual intra-abdominal abscesses (21.5%) and 32.7% had no complications. CONCLUSION: During the study period it was concluded that the female sex showed more complications associated to the appendicular plastron than the male sex, this complication was presented mostly isolated without other added complications and when they were presented, the one with the highest incidence was the surgical wound infection and the post-surgical treatment did not influence the appearance of these complications.
