Pneumonia Among Patients Admitted at Quirino Memorial Medical Center

Abstract:

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) continues to be a major cause of serious illness among the Filipino people. It ranks 3rd and 2nd as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, respectively, here in our country. A clinical practice guideline has recently been developed by the Philippine Practice Guidelines Group in Infectious Diseases (PPGG-ID) on the diagnosis, empiric treatment and prevention of community-acquired pneumonia. This retrospective cohort study was done primarily to determine the adherence of the physicians-in-training at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center to the existing Philippine clinical practice guidelines in the management of community-acquired pneumonia. Seventy-eight patients were included in this study, 63 (80.8%) of which were found to be eligible for admission. All patients were classified under the different categories of CAP depending on the criteria they satisfied. They were further divided into two groups based on compliance with the treatment recommendations of the Philippine clinical practice guidelines. Final outcome was measured in terms of improvement of symptoms, length of hospital stay and survival.
