Pneumothorax and spontaneous pneumomediastino associated with necrotizing pneumonia in COVID-19 infection. Case report

Abstract:

Introduction: In patients with COVID-19 acute respiratory failure is frequent; however, there are complications with a high risk of short -term mortality such as pneumothorax and spontaneous pneumomediastino that require a rapid and timely approach. Clinical case: It is a case of a 70 -year -old male patient with seven -day respiratory symptoms, which progresses severe respiratory distress; with a diagnosis of viral pneumonia by SARS-CoV-2. During the hospitalization, the patient also presents hemoptysis, intense cough and chest pain, in images spontaneous and pneumomediastinum right is reported plus subcutaneous emphysema. After discarding pulmonary thromboembolia, thoracostomy is performed, it is complicated with generalized infection and the patient dies. Conclusion: Pneumomediastino and pneumothorax associated with subcutaneous emphysema and necrotizing pneumonia are infrequent complications of SARS-Cov2 pneumonia associated with poor prognosis.
