Political negativism: Analysis of the use of the twitter account @ realdonaldtrump around the 2016 us presidential elections


Abstract:

This article aims to respond to the questioning of how he incorporates Donald Trump’s attributes of political negativism through the use of his official Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump, during the context of the 2016 electoral campaign, between September 19 and November 9. For the analysis, variables and categories used in the content analysis method were established. As the main results, it was identified that the type of messages emitted on Twitter by Trump are mainly of his own character, this indicates the predominantly personalized nature where the candidate composes his political image when addressing his followers in the first person. As the main finding, the extensive use of messages with the precepts of political negativism stands out as an element of confrontation towards its main political contender, Hillary Clinton, as part of the identification of adversaries that identifies as typical of radical right-wing populism. This may have significantly influenced the achievement of his political image in view of his pre-electoral career.
