Porphyromona Gingivalis and its relationship with alzheimer’s disease

Abstract:

Several studies suggest that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is possibly caused by chronic periodontitis, specifically by cytotoxic by-products such as gingipains and lipopolysaccharides of its predominant causative agent, the bacterium Porphyromona gingivalis (P.g). In this bibliographic review of studies in animals, in-vitro and observationals, the presence of P.g DNA is evidenced in tissues and structures of the central nervous system; determining that gingipains cause an increase in betaamyloid and Tau protein, AD triggering molecules; and also that lipopolysaccharides protect P. gingivalis, in survival and compromise the innate defenses of the host. However, gingipain inhibitors COR286 and COR271 can block neuronal damage by decreasing neurotoxic effects in brain tissues.
