Positioning assessment of surgical cutting guides for osteosarcoma resection utilizing 3D scanning technology

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the positioning of patient-specific cutting guides designed to aid in the extraction of bone tumours located on the distal metaphysis of the femur, a typical osteosarcoma scenario. For the experimentation, an additive manufactured surgical cutting guide was set on top of an anatomical model extracted from a cadaverous femur. After placement, CAD models were obtained by 3D scanning and compared to the design configuration to quantify the mounting translational and rotational error. By obtaining these values, accurate functional requirements can be established for the cutting guides' design, minimizing complications during intraoperative procedures.
