Power losses and Energy Cost Minimization Using Shunt Capacitors Installation in Distribution Systems

Abstract:

The present paper proposes a hybrid optimization technique for optimal location of switched capacitor in distribution networks to reduce the total active power loss and total energy cost. The proposed technique is a combination of Loss Sensitivity Factor (LSF) and a modern metaheuristic optimization technique called Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA). In the proposed technique, the LSF with a fuzzy logic controller is used to find the candidates buses to allocate the switched capacitors and reduce the search space of SSA. The fuzzy logic controller is implemented using the normalized LSF and the voltage magnitude at each bus in the distribution network. Then, candidate buses are determined by the descending order of the weighting value for each bus obtained by the fuzzy output. Once the candidate buses are obtained, the SSA is used to find the optimal capacitor reactive power to reduce the power losses and energy cost. The proposed combined optimization is comprehensively compared with the existing comparative optimization methods to prove its effectiveness. The simulation results are performed on the 15 bus and East Delta Network EDN-30 bus distribution networks. The obtained results show the superior of the proposed method to optimally allocate the switched capacitor in radial distribution systems.
