Preliminary Studies of Performance and Lipid Profiles of Ecuadorian P. volubilis L. as Contribution to Agricultural Innovation

Abstract:

Sacha inchi, Plukenetia volubilis L., is an oilseed cultivated in different localities in Ecuador and has not been widely recognized due to a lack of information about its nutritional benefits and its high content of essential fatty acids. Here, the oil obtained by cold pressing of Sacha inchi seeds from four different regions of Ecuador, El Oro, Cumandá, Chontal, and Napo, has been characterized. The oil extraction yield was determined, and the lipid profile was obtained by GC-FID gas chromatography, which allowed determining the composition of polyunsaturated (oleic, linoleic, linolenic) and saturated (palmitic and stearic) fatty acids. With the results, a one-factor analysis of variance ANOVA, a variability analysis, and a principal component analysis PCA was performed to determine the significant differences between the oils from the different localities. It was concluded that the concentration of essential fatty acids varies for omega 3 between 58.75 and 60.50%; for omega 6 between 31.56 and 32.66%; for omega 9 between 1.33 and 5.18%.
