Preliminary results of the archaeological investigations in Área Islote Lobos, western coast of San Matías Gulf (Río Negro province)

Abstract:

In this paper we present the first results of the archaeological research carried out in a region named Área Natural Protegida Islote Lobos, a central area of San Matías Gulf western coast (Río Negro province, Argentina). The first trends observed from the study of the surface and stratigraphical archaeological record and the chronology obtained are presented. The analysis of lithic artifacts, human remains, zooarchaeological evidence and space organization in this area, provides new information that allows us to begin to delineate general trends about human activities that could have been developed in the region during the Late Holocene. It is proposed that activities aimed to exploit marine and terrestrial resources, along with the planning in the space use, would have been carried on along the area. This allows to begin to discuss about the use of coastal resources and human circulation in the west coast of San Matías Gulf during the last 3000 years within the frame of the regional trends proposed in previous investigations.
