Preliminary study of coating 3D Printed Polymeric Gyroid structures using 'Dragon's blood' extract as a potential delivery system

Abstract:

Additive manufacturing is increasing its applications in the field of pharmaceuticals. The aim of this work was to explore the feasibility of using two methods of coating drugs in 3D printed polymeric gyroid-type. 3D printed gyroid structures were coated by two different methods using the Amazonian herbal remedy, 'Sangre de Drago' (dragon's blood). The coating methods employed were direct perfusion and dip coating. A standard stereolithography resin was used to manufacture the 3D gyroid structures. The analysis of the influence of coating methods was carried out with image processing. The results show a non-linear relationship between porosity and the dragon's blood coated area. The maximum coating was obtained using the perfusion approach, at 70 % of porosity. Meanwhile, with the dip coating, the maximum coating appears at 90 %. We expect this proof-of-concept evaluation to have a potential application in tissue regeneration or defect repair.
