Presence of Indigenous Populations in Ecuadorian and Peruvian Online Newspapers

Abstract:

This research measured the information coverage on indigenous peoples provided by the four most important newspapers in their online versions in Peru and Ecuador, in a context of technological convergence. It is proposed under the positivist paradigm, quantitative approach, exploratory level/scope with a descriptive observational design. The content analysis technique was used, and a coding sheet was used as an instrument. A previous instrument was adapted to facilitate the measurement of 16 indicators corresponding to two dimensions, relevance and attributes, on 124 articles selected during the last quarter of 2021. It was concluded that in that period the main newspapers of Peru and Ecuador show a political positioning in the news coverage provided, from different sections, topics and angles, to the indigenous communities living in these countries. The vision of marginality, abandonment, and folklore is being replaced by representation and political protagonism, a situation that shows possibilities and limitations.
