Prevalence of atrial fibrillation in Ecuadorian mestizo population with diabetes mellitus type 2 inadequately controlled
Abstract:
Objectives: Diabetes mellitus type 2 and atrial fibrillation are two diseases that often coexist. This study examines whether inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus is an independent risk factor for developing atrial fibrillation. Methods: A single-center retrospective of prevalence study in 240 patients diagnosed of type 2 diabetes mellitus, of which 60 patients were in atrial fibrillation and 180 were not in atrial fibrillation. The differences amount the characteristics of both groups were analyzed and logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 was 25% (95% CI 19-30%, p <0.0001). In the logistic regression analysis of atrial fibrillation was significantly more frequent in the presence of HbA1c> 7% in older than 65 years OR 4.6 (95% CI 1.2-22; p = 0.04), female OR 1.95 (95% CI 1.06 to 2.53 p = 0.003), higher than 1,64 m of size OR 8.02 (95% CI 2.8 to 10.2 p = 0.0001), BMI OR 0.83 (95% CI 0.75 to 0.83 p = 0.003), fasting glucose <125 mg/dL OR 0.98 (0.96 to 1.0 IC. 955 p = 0.03), HDL OR 0.86 (95% CI 0.77-0.96 p = 0.002) and consumption of tobacco OR 3.79 95% CI (1.79 to 8.04 p = 0.006). Conclusions: Inadequate control of diabetes mellitus type 2 is one of the independent factors associated with the development of atrial fibrillation.
