Prevalence of different lipid profile abnormalities in the consultation of cardiovascular risk factors from the "Dr. Félix Gómez" Endocrine and Metabolic Diseases Research Center in the period from January 2006 to January 2007
Abstract:
Objective: Isolated (or mixed with other dyslipidemias) low HDLc levels are risk factors for coronary artery disease, thus, the goal of this study was to determinate lipid profile abnormalities prevalence in patients consulting the Endocrine and Metabolic diseases research Center (CIEM) Materials and Methods: This report includes 1251 subjects of both sexes (767 women and 484 men) older than 18 years old that consulted consecutively to the CIEM and had a complete clinical record from January 2006 to January 2007. Results are expressed as absolute frequencies and percentage for each kind of dislipidemia according to ATPIII guidelines. Pearson's Chi Square Test was used in order to determine dichotomyc qualitative variable associations. All statistical analysis was performed with SPSS ver 15 for windows. Results: 94,1% of subjects had any kind of Dyslipidemia and the prevalence was: 1) hypertriacilglyceridemia with low HDLc levels: 31,7% (n=396), 2) low isolated HDLc levels: 26, 1% (n=326), 3) Mixed Dyslipidemia with low HDLc: 11,8 % (n=148), 4) Hypercholesterolemia with low HDLc: 10,4% (n=130), 5) hypertriacilglyceridemia: 5,7% (n=71), 6) hypercholesterolemia: 4,9% (n=61), 7) finally, mixed dyslipidemia with 4,9% (n=45). The most frequent abnormality in dyslipidemic individuals were low isolated HDLc with an 86,6% (27,7% isolated and 58,9% mixed with other dyslipidemia). Conclusion: High prevalence of dyslipidemia in the considered subjects is typical of a center where these pathologies are studied. However, the high prevalence of low HDLc justifying extensive research efforts in order to discover genetic and environmental factors involved. Addition, it is imperative to determinate normal values of plasmatic lipids in our population, to create an optimal system of early detection of this kind of lipid profile disorders.
