Prevalence of dyslipidemia in overweight and obese patients who are seen in Type II Outpatient Clinics in the Sucre Municipality, Miranda State

Abstract:

Introduction: Dyslipidemias are common metabolic disorders in our region, which are often associated with obesity, and constitute the pathophysiological basis of cardiovascular disease through the atherosclerotic process. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dyslipidemia in overweight and obese subjects attending in a nutrition consultation outpatient of the Sucre municipality, Venezuela. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on 117 patients of both sexes aged between 18 and 75 years, by an intentional non-probability sampling. For statistical analysis, qualitative variables were expressed as absolute and relative frequencies, using the Chi-square test for statistical association. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean ± SD, makes comparisons by student's t-test or ANOVA depending on the number of groups, considering results statistically significant p<0,05. Results: In the general population, 84.6% (n=98) were women and 15.4% (n=19) were men. Up to 85.5% of the total population had a lipid disorder, with low HDL-C and elevated triglycerides as dyslipidemias more frequent with 53.8% and 41%, respectively. Also, individuals who had abdominal obesity (IDF/AHA/NHLBI-2009) showed higher levels of serum triglycerides (150,0±77,3 vs. 98,3±10,0; p<0,01). Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of dyslipidemia in obese population attending our clinics nutritional consultation, especially those associated with low HDL-C. Therefore the determination of serum lipids in this group of patients is necessary to identify early and timely handle this set of changes before potential cardiometabolic complications.
