Prevalence of intestinal parasitosis in schoolchildren aged 5 to 9 in the Las Penas neighborhood of the city of Guayaquil 2020
Abstract:
Intestinal parasites are one of the main etiological factors of human infectious diseases worldwide, and it is estimated that parasitic infections (PI), caused by protozoan parasites and helminths, represent 25% of human infectious diseases. Parasitosis affect especially the child population at school stage. The objective was to establish the prevalence of intestinal parasites in schoolchildren aged 5 to 9 years in the Las Penas neighborhood of the city of Guayaquil 2020. 297 stool samples from schoolchildren were studied, by coproparasitological methods, resulting in 135 positive for intestinal parasites, yielding a prevalence of 45.45% for the study sample, when strafing the prevalence by age, a highly significant association was demonstrated with p value of p = 0.0002203 *** for this category variable and the presence of intestinal parasites, showing that children 5 and 6 years of age, reported the highest prevalence for intestinal parasites with 21.48% and 25.19% respectively. The study samples were positive for helminths (Ascaris lumbricoides with 68.15%.) And intestinal protozoa (Entamoeba histoliytica / dispar with 60%). With all of the above, it can be concluded that there is a high frequency of intestinal parasitosis in schoolchildren aged 5 to 9 years in the Las Penas neighborhood of the city of Guayaquil, 2020.
