Prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated factors in the older adults of the Baños Parish, Cuenca


Abstract:

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome refers to the group of risk factors tan can pbkp_redispose the development of diseases such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. It has been determined that its prevalence increases in older adults. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in elderly people from Baños parish, Ecuador, as well as the factors associated to it. Methodology: This is a descriptive, transversal study in which 200 older adults, residents of the Baños parish participated, selected by an intentional sampling in 2 primary care ambulatory centers. A questionnaire was filled for data collection as well, and a complete physical exam and lipid profile as well as fasting glycaemia were performed. The variables were studied in a quantitative and qualitative way, performing the analysis of the data with the SPSS v20. Results: Metabolic syndrome had a prevalence of 61.5% and it was considerably higher in the female gender (68.7% vs. 47.8%; p=0,004). Likewise, a significant association was determined with those that had diabetes and hypertension as well as those individuals with a body mass index higher than 25 in a univariant analysis. Furthermore, this last one was determined as a significant risk factor for the development of metabolic syndrome in our population after multivariable adjusted analysis. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the older adult population of the Baños Parish, Cuenca, with special emphasis in females and those patients diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension, overweight or obesity. Therefore, it is necessary to study these patients with special care as well as promoting lifestyle changes apt for the older population, with the objective of providing them with a better quality of life.
