Prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and associated factors in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela
Abstract:
Purpose: the objective of this investigation was to analyze the epidemiologic behavior of this disease in our locality. Materials and methods: the maracaibo city metabolic syndrome prevalence study is a cross sectional which recruited a total of 2.228 individuals, who were subjected to clinical examination, anthropometry and laboratory measures after written consent was obtained. Qualitative variables were expressed as absolute and relative frequencies using c2test and z for proportions for association. Quantitative variables were expressed as mean±sd, using t student test or anova one factor for comparisons. Four logistic regression models were constructed, in order to evaluate the association of known cardiometabolic risk factors with dm2. Results: out of the 2.228 individuals enrolled in this study, there were 52.5% women and 47.5% men. A total of 8.4% were classified as dm2, while 19.5% had impaired fasting glucose (ifg). The most important risk factors were: age > 50 years (or = 25.68, 95% ci 9.86 to 66.89, p <0.001), insulin resistance (or = 4.78, 95% ci 3.09 to 7.38, p <0.001) ; p = 0.02, family history of dm (or 1.90 95% ci 2.78 1,30-,. P <0.001); hypertriglyceridemia (or = 1.98, 95% ci 1.34 to 2.93, p <0.001 and arterial hypertension (or = 4.78, 95% ci 3.09 to 7.38, p <0.001) and a factor physical activity protective sphere q4 work (or = 0.29, 95% ci 0.11-0.81 Conclusions: dm2 prevalence in our locality is similar to that observed in other settlements, while ifg was rather high than other survey studies. The application of population- specific variables during the evaluation of a high-risk individual confers a better assessment of dm2 peril in our community.
