Prevalencia de constipación crónica funcional y factores asociados en escolares y adolescentes atendidos en consulta de Gastroenterología pediátrica en el Hospital José Carrasco Arteaga. Cuenca, 2017.


Abstract:

Objective: to determine the prevalence of chronic functional constipation and associated factors in schoolchildren and adolescents attended in Gastropediatrics of "José Carrasco Arteaga" Hospital, Cuenca, 2017. Materials and methods: cross-sectional descriptive study, in children from 6 to 15 years of age in the outpatient area of Gastropediatrics of the Hospital ¨José Carrasco Arteaga¨, who are accompanied by a legal representative. Data were obtained from 320 patients and later analyzed in the SPSS program. Results: 1,152 children were treated in Gastropediatrics, 320 consulted for constipation and 263 (82.2%) were diagnosed with functional chronic constipation, with a prevalence of 22.8%; 47.5% belonged to the masculine sex, appearing with greater frequency in the students, coming from the urban area (67.5%), without family antecedents (92.2%). Regarding the associated risk factors, it was present in 52.5% of the women and the majority were sedentary (68.8%), with normal weight (45.6%), consumed less than 10 grams of fiber (89.4%) and ingested less than 1500cc of liquids per day (97.7%). In addition, a negative association with sedentary lifestyle and lower fluid consumption, no association with sex and positive association with overweight / obesity and low daily fiber consumption was determined. Statistical significance was determined with sedentary lifestyle and no statistical significance with sex, overweight / obesity, fiber consumption and fluid intake in one day. Conclusions: the prevalence of chronic functional constipation in children stands out in the Gastropediatric consultation and is associated with risk factors such as overweight / obesity and low fiber consumption
