Prevalencia de depresión y factores asociados en los adultos mayores del Instituto de Promoción para el Envejecimiento Activo del Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social, Cuenca 2014

Abstract:

The retirement in our country is at the age of 65, with an increase in chronic diseases are now are degenerative, disability by various situations; therefore, we should prepare to the people that are close to retirement to properly incorporate to the society and so avoid the depression that, currently, at the global level is presented in 9.5 %. Objective: To determine the prevalence of depression and associated factors in older adults of the Institute for the Promotion for the Active Aging of the IESS, Cuenca 2014. Methodology: We conducted an observational, analytical cross-sectional study; the sample was composed of 117 older adults’ retirees of the Institute for the Promotion for the Active Aging of the IESS of the city of Cuenca. Test was applied to know Yasavage depression in older adults. We excluded to the older adults with neurological diseases or schizophrenic. The data were analyzed in the SPSS program, were tables with frequencies and percentages to describe the population. To determine the factors associated used the OR with 95% confidence interval. It was considered statistically significant values of p<0.05. Results: The prevalence of depression was 33.33 %, among the most frequent 70-79 years (mild depression 13.70%, moderate depression 1.70%), women were the most affected 28.2 %, the marital status single, widowed and divorced 23.1 % and in those that had a level of instruction in secondary and higher 23.1 %. Depending on the type of depression the prevailing mild depression 30.77 %, followed by mild depression 2.56 %; there were no cases of severe depression. Statistically significant association was found with the occupation OR= 0.20 95% CI 0.07 -0.57 p-value = 0.01. Conclusions: The prevalence of depression is high and is associated with the condition if the older person is occupied.
