Abstract:
The main objective of this study was identifying the Burnout Prevalence Syndrome and other psychological variables associated with mental health, coping strategies perception of social help and personality traits in doctors and patients in a public hospital in the northeastern sector of the city of Quito. The investigation was carried out in 2017, with 28 physicians and 9 nurses with an average age of 40.25 years and with their proper informed consent. In this research six instruments were applied: the Socio-demographic and Labor Questionnaire AD-Hoc, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (HBI-HSS), the Mental Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), the Multidimensional Scale of Coping Styles Evaluation (BRIEF-COPE), the MOS Social Support Questionnaire, and the Eysenck Revised Personality Questionnaire EPQR-A. Although in the present study no cases of burnout were found, it is important to note that important parameters were found in the associated variables: 25% of doctors and 11% of nurses with high emotional exhaustion, 21.4% of physicians and 22.2% of nurses with depersonalization and 21.4% of doctors and 55.6% of nurses with low personal performance. Likewise, in the sample of nurses, high levels of anxiety were found, reaching 75% and 55.6% of somatic symptoms; in physicians, we observe 53% in somatic symptoms and 63% in anxiety, whose motive can be the hourly load, the demand of superiors and patients, the bureaucratic paperwork, but above all, the responsibility that they have on the health and life of the patients. This is concluded by noting that the perception of social and emotional support is, in general, high in the sample.
