Abstract:

The aim of this study was determine the frequency of partial and complete edentulism and the relationship with factors as: nutritional status and quality of life, and determine the impact of age and sex in the loss of teeth. Materials and Methods: The sample was collected in the College of Dentistry of University of Cuenca. The patients were adults. The sample was of three hundred seventy eight patients (378), and by means of a survey the patient's information was registered. Through visual examination and Kennedy’s classification the type of edentulism was established. The nutritional status was calculated through the body mass index BMI, and the analysis of the impact of the quality of life was carried out by means of questionnaire OHIP 14 (Oral health impact profile). The tabulation and analysis of the data was registered in the SPSSv21 program. The statistical test was the odds ratio. Results: The data revealed that the partially edentulous is the most frequent type of tooth loss, so Kennedy class III was predominant in both jaws, relationship between edentulism and quality of life no association with nutritional status was found. Sex doesn’t represent a risk factor for edentulous, unlike age if considered as risk of tooth loss. It was concluded that edentulism isn’t a pbkp_redisposing factor for impaired nutritional status but affects quality of life. It was further noted that sex doesn’t affect the presence of edentulous. However tooth loss if it depends on the age, noting that the older increased risk of edentulism
