Abstract:
Objective: To determine the prevalence of aggressive behavior and its associated factors in children enrolled in rural schools in Cuenca, 2010- 2011. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional, descriptive study conducted from April to December of 2011. The sample was drawn from a universe of 10,718 students from rural schools in Cuenca, with 5.5% of expected frequency, a worst acceptable of 6.5%, a confidence level of 95% and a 10% of losses that were added. The total sample of 1851 students was randomized in Epidat and then randomly assigned to three groups of pre-graduate students, each group with 612 children from 61 rural schools of the communities: Baños, Cumbe, Checa Chiquintad, Llacao, Molleturo and Nulti. To compile the information a valid questionnaire was used and applied it to the children, prior informed consent of parents. The information was processed using the following software: SPSS 15.00 assessment version, Microsoft Excel 2007 and Microsoft Word 2007. Results: The moderate level of physical and verbal aggressiveness was more frequent in children with emigrant parents (p = 0.017 and 0.000). Moderate aggressiveness was more frequent in those who watched television from 6 to 8 hours a day than those who watched less time or did not have it (p = 0.011). Physical, verbal and social aggressiveness, both moderate and severe, were more frequent in children with dysfunctional families. (p = 0,000) Conclusions: Associated factors to aggressive behavior were: dysfunctional families, hours of television exposure and emigration.
