Prevalencia y factores asociados a la doble carga nutricional en las familias del Distrito 01D01 Cuenca- Norte 2018


Abstract:

Background Currently, the coexistence of deficits and nutritional excesses in the same individual, family or community is high. It is known as double burden of malnutrition (DBM). Stunting and obesity increase morbidity and mortality. Objective To determine the prevalence and factors associated with the double burden of malnutrition in children under 5 years old and your families of the northern area of Cuenca city at 2018. Materials and methods Cross-sectional, analytical, prevalence study, evaluating 191 families with children under 5 years. The sample was calculated with a proyection of Distrito de Salud 01D01(26,463), prevalence of 13.1%, an error limit of 5% and a 95% confidence level. Data analysis was performed a descriptive analysis and a relationship between individual DBM and family DBM with sex, age and eating patterns such as breastfeeding, complementary feeding and the child's dietary diversity; age, ethnicity, schooling, short stature and number of children of the mother, head of family, type, size, residence and family´s socioeconomic status. Results The prevalence of individual DCN is 5.2% and it was associated with mother head of household and single parent families. The family DCN prevalence is 14.7% and it was associated with breastfeeding, maternal short stature, mother with two or more children, large families and low average socioeconomic status. Conclusions The prevalence of individual and family DCN is higher than that found by other studies. The factors associated to the individual and family DCN are different.
