Prevalencia y factores asociados al sobrepeso en estudiantes de ciencias de la Salud, Universidad de Cuenca, 2016

Abstract:

Background. The prevalence of overweight in the University is of interest and constitutes a public health problem associated with factors that can be modified. Objective. Determine the prevalence of overweight and associated factors: lifestyle, physical activity and insulin resistance, in the students of Health Sciences of the University of Cuenca. Methodology. With a cross-sectional design included 250 students of medicine, nursing, medical technology and Dentistry of the University of Cuenca, selected randomly from 2017 attendance record. Describes the variables: age, sex, marital status and residence. Overweight by using the index of body mass (IMC) and the factors were identified: lifestyle through the FANTASTIC scale, IPAQ through physical activity and resistance to insulin by HOMA-IR index. We sought association between overweight and their factors with RP (IC95%). Results. Age of study group ranged from 18 to 26 years, with an average of 20.4 ± 1.9 years. The 70.8% were between 18 and 21 years. 82% was from the 1st to the 5th cycle. Predominated unmarried civilian female with 55.6%, state sex with the 93.2% and 78% with urban residence. The prevalence of overweight was 26.8% (21.6 - 32.6). There was significant association of overweight sedentary physical activity [RP 4.2 (95% CI: 1.1 – 16.4)] P = 0.010 and insulin resistance [RP 3.1 (95% CI: 2.1 - 4.5)] P = 0.000, however with the bad life style there was no association. Conclusion. The prevalence of overweight and its association with the sedentary lifestyle factors and resistance to insulin, in the University of Cuenca, are similar to the one reported by the medical literature but the bad life style shows a different pattern
