Principles for the management of the shrimp postlarvae fishery in Ecuador

Abstract:

A diagram of the cause - effect relationship of environmental, management and social aspects of the fishery is presented. The authors highlight that the key issues of the fishery are lack of management policies, open access, inefficient control of existing regulations, increasing number of fishermen, decline of the capture and habitat destruction. It is suggested that the framework for managing the fishery must contemplate 1) limit the access to the fishery, 2) avoid subsidizing the fishery and 3) protection of the resource.
