A Smartphone-Based System Supporting Forward Collision Warning Generation

Abstract:

In this paper we present a forward collision warning application for smartphones that uses license plate recognition to detect situations where the vehicle behind does not maintain an established safe distance between itself and the vehicle ahead. Warnings are generated to notify the driver of the vehicle behind of a probable collision, depending on the calculated distance between the two vehicles, making use of images captured by a dashboard-mounted smartphone. Thus, devices running our application have to be equipped with at least a back camera, and possess sufficient processing power to analyse the images captured. This first version of the application was tested in static scenarios, without involving any sort of motion, to validate our approach. Experiments show that the application performance was affected by the hardware limitations of the smartphone used.
