Productive specialization by a multi-criteria selection process that considers water use of the products in the province of loja, ecuador


Abstract:

Climate change is impacting food sovereignty in various populations; however, considerations such as water use in the commodity chain thrust have not yet been analyzed in depth. There are various studies on commodity conglomerates and territorial benchmarking that identify winner or potential winner sectors, which identify chains that are competitive in "sugar", "spices and condiments", and "coffee" manufacturing (UTPL, 2011). However, water use as a key factor in territorial specialization has not been taken into account as selection criteria. It is estimated that in Ecuador there is a water use of 2.007 cubic meters per year per inhabitant; 88% of which is internal; this implies several challenges, including the need to consider factors associated to climate change when creating local plans and projects.
