Projection moire as a tool for the automated determination of surface topography

Abstract:

This paper describes a projection moire set-up useful in the automated and accurate determination of the surface topography of objects. Some unique aspects of the experimental set-up and the implementation of the automated procedures used are: the center line of fringes, especially for the case of broad fringes whose distributions of gray level are much more complicated than those of narrow fringes, can be automatically distinguished and traced; the use of a translation stage allows a distinction to be made between a depression and an elevation, also permitting access to phase information between two fringes; and, fringe orders are automatically assigned, excluding the presence of false fringes.
