Prolactin, LH, FSH and TSH responses to a dopamine antagonist in subjects on oral contraceptives

Abstract:

Serum prolactin (PRL), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and thyrotropin (TSH) were measured in women using oral contraceptives (OC) before and after i.v. administration of 0.25 mg of clebopride. A significant increase in serum PRL to an 18-fold peak as compared with basal levels occurred 30 minutes after clebopride injection. No significant effects of clebopride were noted upon the circulating levels of LH, FSH and TSH. Our findings suggest a high endogenous dopaminergic control on PRL secretion in OC users.
