Proposal for seismic reinforcement with common reed for adobe masonries in heritage buildings

Abstract:

World experience on the loss of historic assets corroborates that urban heritage settlements built with earth are at evident seismic risk. This problem positions structural interventions of seismic reinforcement as an alternative to protect this type of buildings. This paper presents an architectural proposal for seismic reinforcement with common reed (Phragmites australis) for adobe masonry walls in heritage buildings; the methodological process includes material characterization, archetype construction, design and validation of the reinforcement by the test of physical models that represent the horizontal action of lateral loads on archetypes with and without structural reinforcement. The experimental results show that the angle of inclination of the reinforced archetypes exceeds those without reinforcement by 17.49% and the width of the cracks is reduced by 71.47%, increasing the bending capacity. The project is also 87.32% adapted for use according to criteria of authenticity, minimum intervention and compatibility
