Proposal of an obstacle evasion system for a drone applied to the inspection in distribution and transmission networks

Abstract:

The present research project centered in the construction of an obstacle evasion system for a drone dedicated to inspection in distribution and transmission networks. It is convenient to carry out inspections to capture visual and thermographic images of the elements of the network, however, this process is dangerous and expensive due to the security it demands. The prototype incorporates an obstacle detection and evasion system capable of detecting electric cables to improve the safety of the drone and personnel, incorporating a wireless communication system that guarantees the control and visualization of data and images on the ground. The tests gave as results: a range 0.60m to 3.6m for cable detection, 0.5m to 2m for lateral detection and 150m as the maximum distance of wireless communication between the prototype and the ground station, with a flight autonomy of 12 minutes. This low cost tool, in obtaining reliable and necessary information for the supervision of transmission and distribution lines.
