A Virtual Shooting Range, Experimental Study for Military Training

Abstract:

In the field of security and defence, training is considered one of the key factors to improve the skills of soldiers in tactical operations. Technological and communications advances have allowed the development of new technological tools to be effective and have a significantly lower operating cost. This work presents the design of a virtual shooting range, simulating an open polygon that includes the recreation of real scenarios from each region of the country, 3D objects, silhouettes, targets and weapons. The first-person shooter avatar soldier modelled as a 3D object, placed in a location and orientation relative to the virtual environment. It includes four virtual environments: Amazon jungle, rural, coastal and snowy. The preliminary results obtained in usability showed that the participants perceived realism in the scenarios and the 3D objects that compose them. The assessment in relation to the devices used shows that the virtual reality glasses and the VR gun controllers facilitated the visualization and interaction with the virtual scenarios during the training. The overall usability average was 4.90/5. Participants show no symptoms of cyber-sickness after training. This work could be a useful and complementary tool to train military personnel, improve the skills of soldiers to carry out tactical operations. It could even be a low-cost technological alternative, it would reduce the risk, increase the time and number of training sessions.
