Protocols for shared VRML urban projects

Abstract:

This paper sets a strategy for collective review of urban projects through shared VRML models and it discusses some characteristics and tools, in order to integrate several visitors on real time, from different locations on the same digital model. This work is under development by researchers of three Latin-American schools of architecture setting up students' projects in multi-user virtual worlds. Based on this experience it defines procedures and resources that could be applied in professional projects to improve public participation and design. This application provides three benefits to 3D urban representation: 1) interactivity to modify elements, 2) immersion, to explore urban virtual worlds like an inhabitant, and 3) multi-user's interface under a free technological platform. As a consequence of this interactive strategy of urban analysis through multi-user's virtual world, it hopes to increase the planners and architects design perception as well as non-specialized persons, taking decisions, analysis and promotion.
