Prototype of an Integrated System with IoT Technology for Physiotherapeutic Rehabilitation in Older Adults Through Assisted Technology in a Gerontological Center

Abstract:

This research is focused on creating a physiotherapeutic prototype through four activities: (1) structural design; (2) embedded system; (3) wireless communication; and (4) web application. Taking the data from the field survey conducted by ESPE branch Latacunga in collaboration with MIES Cotopaxi in the gerontological center “Sagrada Familia” canton La Maná, it was determined that the residents suffer mostly from osteoarthritis, arthritis and tendinitis, in addition, it was determined that the gerontological center does not have the necessary equipment to treat these diseases. The use of this prototype will help to reduce muscle aches and pains caused by stiffness in the joints of the elderly and will elevate their mood through a multimedia system that encourages them to continue with the exercises, and it will also facilitate the physiotherapist staff in the monitoring of their patients through the use of the web application via the IoT. The prototype was validated through technical tests performed in each activity of the established methodology; it was found that the structural design is functional and stable to support the weight of the patient, the embedded system controls the multimedia system effectively, allowing an adequate wireless connection and the transmission of the information (physiotherapeutic exercise of the patient) to the web application, storing those records in a database.
